What follows is an interview with Roy Tersley of Janusworldwide discussing both the past & future of the Janus spanking brand ..............

Roy. Thanks for taking the time to do this interview. It’s been a pleasure to witness the resurrection of the “Janus” brand at Janusworldwide. Care to let us know some of your history at Janus and what is planned as the site develops.

Let me start by letting you know that we have just put some of the History of Janus on the site so let me provide an emphasis on the photography side to complement this.

I have a great admiration for some of the amazing images produced in the past, particularly given the equipment available at the time, and the fact that there was no real way of “touching up” the photographs. The photographer had only one role of colour film and a few roles of black and white, and I can imagine the trepidation / excitement of seeing the images develop -or not!.

As well as taking these imaginative images, the photographers also assisted with the layout of the magazine. Over time there where several photographers, with the longest serving being Vic Barnes (more about him later). George Harrison- Marks was the editor and photographer in the late 1970’sand early 1980’s before he left to set up Kane magazine and prior to him the previous editor Van, who was not a professional photographer took the pictures.

The cover shot of Janus magazines was so vital to selling a particular issue. Many of them simply hinted at the spanking to come.

The main aim when composing Janus images over the years has consistently been to fire the imagination rather than depict and event in graphic detail. The Janus cover was always an important choice because it had to be an invitation for the customer to “step in” and view. The magazine has always tried to push the boundaries and stimulate the imaginative thinking and role play. It is important to remember the seemingly ever- changing interpretation of censorship laws presented a challenge that for the most part the magazine overcame, but inevitably this had an impact on some of the creative decisions regarding content.

A Classic Janus Cover, the style I always adored ...

Very shortly The Cherry Red Report will be showing a selection of ten most popular covers. All of these have been selected from Janus Issues 1 – 167. I would like to share with you some of my favourites form earlier series of volumes – these being Volume 8, number 3 and 12 and Volume 9 number 1.

The obvious question now, what has been one of your most memorable photo sessions?

There are many but one that stands out was a photo shoot that took place in a 5 star London Hotel. I had booked a double room and we arranged to meet in the bar. The photographer was Vic and the model was Natalie. (I subsequently did an interview with Natalie that appeared in Februs 37)

I had arranged to meet the editor, Vic and Natalie and a couple of others of the crew in the bar of the hotel. This was fine and the group started to assemble and drinks appeared and bar tab started.

Then, Natalie made an entrance – Natalie was a flamboyant young lady and arrived in a Technicolour hat, a very short skirt and boots. She caught the eye of everyone in the bar as well as the bar staff.

Next to arrive was Vic - Vic travelled everywhere on his motorbike. This was in itself a feat as he had his cameras, his tripod and his lights all with him. This meant that his entrance was almost as dramatic and that of Natalie – Black leathers, boots, rucksack, and assorted bags. I remember seeing the bar man raise his eyebrow is a disapproving sort of way.

By now the drinks were flowing and our party was becoming a little loud so I suggested we go to the room. Somehow and we all crammed into the lift and went up to the room.

Vic organised all the people, set up his lights, Natalie changed and the shoot started.

At this time “room service” arrived delivering the drinks we hadn’t finished and presenting the tab for signature. As the waitress brought the drinks into the room all she could see was a large number of people surrounding a floodlit bed on which lay Natalie with her knickers down being spanked. The look on the waitress’s face is one I remember to this day

Natalie was a great success and appeared in Janus 132,133 and 138.

Where do you find your models?

We are very lucky in having built a reputation in the market with both models and agencies but, importantly, our approach means that people are attracted to us as we provide a no hassle, honest, safe and sane approach that encourages people to contact us if they wish to try the modelling aspect out.

Amelia Jane Rutherford has written a very good article that appears on her site that gives great advice to models covering all the important aspects they should be aware of – security, safety, references etc.

I am always happy to spend time to meet and discuss with potential models what is involved over a coffee with no obligation or commitment.

Also, you need to bear in mind that we require a broad range of models– not just page 3 types, the “girl next door image” is always attractive.

I actually haven’t been back to Old Compton Street since the Janus shop was closed. I don’t think many spankos outside of the UK will realise just how much of a pilgrimage that shop was when visiting London. It was a spanking icon. Do you agree?

Yes I do agree and like you and a lot of others, I have so many memories of the shop. I visited the shop in Green Court and, of course, Old Compton Street on many an occasions. I have fond memories of Mary the cleaner (sadly no longer with us) and the “staff” who were always consistently brusque and blunt. The kiosks at the rear of the shop and the whirring of the projectors are all memories.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this interview, there is now a brief history of Janus on the website that tells the story of the magazine and some of the characters who have contributed to the Janus legend over the past 40 years – the oldest spanking magazine in the world!

My friend Richard Windsor is going to be writing about his personal experiences of visiting the shop and I would very much appreciate others writing in with their own recollections and experiences and we will publish them – archive@janusworldwide.com. Richard and I have very similar tastes and experiences even though we are3,000 miles apart and I look forward to meeting him some day.

Maybe we should ask Westminster Council to put a Blue Plaque on the wall !

Do have news about the future that you can share with me?

You may have noticed that we have started to offer classic issues of Roue for downloading via www.janusworldwide.com alongside digital editions of Janus and Februs and the range of titles will continue to increase. This service has proven to be very popular, as, all the magazines are long out of print. You may have noticed that we also add previously unseen and unpublished images taken at the time.

We have recently revived and invested in the Bognor Cane Company and are now releasing and sell a full range of both wooden and leather implements. The emphasis has been on the maintenance of quality and to provide quality implements to order. Each implement has been tried out and “bottom tested” by Janus Jane and she has provided her own feedback as to their “effectiveness”. Jane would be very happy to elaborate and provide further advice.

We are also offering a new and exclusive “bespoke service” where we manufacture both wooden and leather implements to individual tastes and requirements with a full consultation process.

We have just completed an order for a selection of ebony handled paddles.

There is a very dynamic programme in place for expanding the site and we are all working hard to ensure the success of the site over the coming years.

What is your impression of the spanking scene at the moment?

This is a difficult question to answer as I am no expert and have a very UK focussed view.

My personal observation is that over the past couple of years there have been some interesting new initiatives with people moving things forward. For example, Northern Spanking have consistently invested their time, energy and money in producing good quality productions, the Spanking Writers have encouraged new people to write and submit their work as well as re- design the site and Pandora Blake has focused her efforts in producing a new approach on her excellent new website – Dreams of Spanking*. Leia-Ann Woods has provided a new and refreshing approach to London based parties – Bottomsupspanking and The London Tanners are taking the US party scene approach to Spain and our Irish friends are having a great time with meets and parties – All great news and very exciting and demonstrates how the scene is becoming increasingly dynamic with a lot to look forward to in 2012.

*I am very flattered to see that a large number of the images I created with Pandora are now available on her site.
